Quantity takeoff vs BOQ: what is the difference?
A quantity takeoff is the measurement work used to count and quantify what appears in drawings or a model. A BOQ organizes measured work into items that can be priced and compared. The takeoff produces quantities. The BOQ packages those quantities with descriptions, units and a structure for tendering or cost control.

What is a quantity takeoff?
Quantity takeoff is the work of identifying and measuring construction elements from the project information. Depending on the trade, the output might include counts, linear lengths, areas, volumes or weights.
A useful takeoff keeps a link to its source. If a reviewer sees a floor area or fixture count, they should be able to return to the relevant drawing, schedule or model element and understand how it was measured.
What is a BOQ?
A BOQ arranges construction scope into descriptions, units and quantities that can be priced. It may use quantities produced by the takeoff, but it also needs a bill structure, work descriptions and a clear pricing basis.

How takeoff becomes a BOQ
- Review the current drawings, schedules, model and specifications.
- Define the measurement scope and breakdown.
- Measure each element and retain its source reference.
- Group the quantities into pricing items and sections.
- Write descriptions that state the work being priced.
- Check that every takeoff item is included once in the BOQ.
One BOQ line may combine several takeoff measurements. The reverse can also happen when a measured element needs separate items for different specifications, locations or work stages.
Example: measuring and pricing a floor finish
The takeoff records the floor area from the applicable drawings and identifies the rooms included. The BOQ line then describes the finish, states the measurement unit and carries the accepted quantity into a pricing row. The estimator uses that row to build the tender rate from the specified material, installation resources and project allowances.
If the drawing area changes, the takeoff should show where and why. If the finish specification changes, the BOQ description and price basis need to follow it.
